St Sidwells Point Leisure Centre
Breathing Life into Innovation
In a significant move towards sustainability, St Sidwell's Point Leisure Centre has become the first Passivhaus certified leisure centre in the UK. Led by Exeter City Council, this project is a pioneer in energy efficiency and environmental consciousness within public buildings. From working with MEP consultants at Arup and Passivhaus designers – Gale & Snowden in the initial planning stages, through to the completion of the building, our team at Swegon in close collaboration with Gale and Snowden helped create an effective ventilation solution that aligns with Passivehaus standards.
Going for GOLD
The ventilation system design at St Sidwell's Point Leisure Centre took a lot of meticulous planning. Central to our strategy was the installation of our GOLD RX units, which were used to tackle the challenge of humidity control within the building. Alongside ensuring compliance to Passivhaus standards, we also looked to achieve optimal energy efficiency. A key to this planning was our AHU Design tool, which provided invaluable insights into the ventilation equipment selection. With its guidance, we were able to ensure our units were meeting PHI standards to achieve improved air quality and sustainability.

In this project, our GOLD units play an important role in maintaining an optimal humidity level to create a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. Through insulation techniques, minimal thermal bridging and air leakage control, a continuous flow of fresh air helps improve occupant comfort whilst minimising energy wastage. Our RECOsorptic heat exchangers, boasting a 70-90% humidity recovery efficiency, work to not only enhance comfort, but also reduce the spread of diseases.

By aligning with the council's vision for a sustainable and environmentally friendly leisure centre, collaborative efforts between Swegon and Gale and Snowden Architects ensured the ventilation system of this project was a success. Together, we investigated the details of the project’s indoor climate design and were able navigate challenges, working to create a healthier future for the facility's local community and beyond.
